Gatari Regis: From Football Player to Studio Technician at Mount Kigali University

Gatari Regis works as a studio technician and practical instructor in the journalism department at Mount Kigali University (MKU). In a recent interview with student journalists, he shared details about his career path.

Regis first joined MKU as a student. Near the end of his eighth semester, he decided to start a YouTube channel focused on sports news in Rwanda. Lacking equipment, he approached his lecturer, Sir. Festus Irungu, who managed the practical tools. Festus agreed to let him use the gear and offered ongoing encouragement, telling him to keep working hard.

Before media, Regis played professional football for a while.

He later moved into sports journalism, at Radio IZUBA  and SANA radio covering sports programs across Rwanda.

This experience helped him return to MKU as a student.

When a technician position opened. Regis followed the guidance, passed the test, and got the job. He now helps students turn classroom learning into practical work, using the same equipment he once borrowed.

Regis credits mr. Festus for much of his progress, describing him as a supportive figure who gave key advice at important moments.

His advice to current MKU students is straightforward: focus beyond just grades—attend classes regularly, stay on top of schedules, and follow lecturers’ recommendations. Doing so, he says, leads to successful graduation.

Regis’s path shows how changing direction, seeking help, and staying consistent can build a solid career in media.
